Founded in 2018, by Jonathan Estabrooks and Miranda Plant, to support the creation of a new feature-length documentary, Black Opera Productions LLC is committed to celebrating legendary Black American opera history, while fostering new opportunities and cultural equity for 21st Century artists.

Miranda Plant,
Co-Founder / Producer
An award-winning producer and actor, Miranda Plant has produced for film, television, and new media. Favorite award-winning projects include When We Grow Up (2018), starring Cate Curtin (Stranger Things, Insecure); Greater Good (2018); and Deconstructing Broadway, starring Seth Rudetsky. She is the Executive Member of Women’s Weekend Film Challenge, and a Board member of Reel Families for Change.
Crystal Whaley,
Consulting Line Producer
Crystal Whaley is a multiple Emmy-Award winning creative producer and development executive in film/TV/digital offering a unique combination of cross-functional skills with over 15 years of experience. She has developed, produced, directed and supervised award winning series TV, commercials, music videos and nationally syndicated and Peabody nominated documentaries for PBS and TLC.
Kenneth Overton,
Associate Producer / Host
Kenneth Overton’s baritone voice has sent him around the globe. Kenneth is one of the most sought after Opera singers of his generation, including appearances with the NY Phil, San Francisco Opera and more. Kenneth serves as co-founder and artistic director of Opera Noire of New York, created to empower African-American artists to reach their full creative potential in a creative supportive environment.
Katherine Castro,
Director of Photography
Recently selected for the American Film Institute Cinematography Intensive for Women in Los Angeles, Katherine is a New York City based Cinematographer. Her work spans television, narrative film, music videos, and documentary. Notable projects include: Tech Bettys; Little Women (starring Emma Watson, Soairse Ronan); Castle Rock; American Dharma; Super Troopers 2; SMILF; Wormwood.
Jonathan Estabrooks,

As a director, producer and Juilliard Opera graduate, Mr. Estabrooks is passionate about telling compelling stories through performance, filmmaking or arts advocacy. His work has garnered over 3 million views and has been featured on Billboard.com, NY Times, NBC and more. Mr. Estabrooks has collaborated with 4-time Grammy-winning producer Dave Reitzas and Tony-winning producer, Michael Morritz Jr.
Ras Dia,
JN75 Gala Producer
Ras Dia is a producer and curator who specializes in multi-disciplinary arts programming. He is the Assistant Producer of the Metropolitan Opera’s Peabody- and Emmy-award winning Live in HD series, and most recently served as Associate Producer for MTT25: An American Icon, a virtual tribute to Michael Tilson Thomas presented by the San Francisco Symphony, as well as helped to produce the Jessye Norman Memorial Celebration for the Met and the Ford Foundation, with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Renée Fleming, Anna Deveare Smith, and Gloria Steinem, and many others gathering to pay tribute to the remarkable artist.
