Episode 41: Gorgeous Ladies of Glynebourne

 

Cynthia Clarey

Cynthia Clarey joined the cabaret world in Chicago after 35 years as an international opera singer.   She can be seen on film in “L’incoronazione di Poppea” with the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and in the award nominated “Porgy and Bess” directed by Trevor Nunn. Since coming to Chicago, she has been teaching at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University.  She is a member of Chicago Cabaret Professionals and has performed at several venues in Chicago and beyond. Two years ago, she made her theater debut in Porchlight Music Theater’s “Scottsboro Boys” and was seen last year in their revisit of “1776”. She also has two one woman shows, “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” and “Bridge Over Muddied Waters” that she presented at Davenport’s, Roosevelt, at the Schorr Family Firehouse Theater in Johnson City, NY,  and at the 8th Floor Club Room at Symphony Center In Chicago.  

Cynthia Haymon

Perhaps best known around the world as Bess in Porgy and Bess, Ms. Haymon made her debut in 1985 in the title role of Thea Musgrave’s Harriet, A Woman called Moses, in the world-premiere performance for the Virginia Opera. Since then, her career has taken her around the United States with engagements that include Micaela in Carmen with the San Francisco Opera and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and Liu in Turandot with the Seattle Opera. In 1986 she made her European debut as Bess in Trevor Nunn’s production of Porgy and Bess at Glyndebourne, with Sir Simon Rattle. She also created the role of Coretta King in the musical King, opposite Simon Estes in London’s West End. In concert, Ms. Haymon appeared with the Israel Philharmonic under Kurt Masur, the London Symphony Orchestra under both Myung-Whun Chung and Michael Tilson Thomas, the Cleveland Orchestra under Isaiah Jackson, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the world premiere of Ned Rorem’s Swords and Plowshares. 

Marietta Simpson

Marietta Simpson, a native of Philadelphia known for her deeply expressive, beautiful mezzo-soprano voice, has sung with every major orchestra in the United States, under many of the world's greatest conductors, including the late Kurt Masur, Simon Rattle, Lorin Maazel and the late Robert Shaw with whom she made her Carnegie Hall debut in 1988.  She has also sung with many of the Europe’s major orchestras including the those of London, Prague, Berlin and Vienna. She has performed on some of the great operatic stages of the world including La Fenice, La Scala, Glyndebourne, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Opéra de Bordeaux, Houston Grand Opera, LA Opera, New York City Opera, Glimmerglass, Washington National Opera, and Opera Company of Philadelphia.

Paula Dione Ingram

Paula Dione Ingram has been described as one of the finest singing actresses of our time. Noted for her considerable versatility, she is a winning performer whether on stage in her trained field of opera/musical theatre/cabaret, in front of cameras for commercials, film and television and while coaching young artists via her collegiate master class tour. She has sung extensively in Europe, particularly in Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium and England. Having lived and worked in New York City for a brief time, she is now residing in Las Vegas, Nevada pursuing her passion for performance, coaching, writing and composing. Presently, she is collaborating on a new project documenting her life and career as a, classically trained singer, on a non traditional path. Education: A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Paula Dione Ingram earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance in Voice/Opera Performance. And her Master of Music degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Voice/Opera Performance, where she studied with renowned operatic soprano Madame Virginia Zeani.
